Clinical extractions

Cleared safely. Without the scar.

The clogged pore that won't resolve on its own is the one that ends up picked — and the pick is what leaves the scar. Clinical extractions remove the comedone in a few minutes, with sanitary technique and controlled pressure, so the skin around it stays intact.

Clinical extractions explained

The difference between extracting and picking.

A clinical extraction is the controlled, sanitary removal of the contents of a clogged pore — blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) — using proper technique and proper tools, on skin that’s been prepped first.

Picking is what most of us do instead: bare fingers, no prep, too much force, on whatever looks tempting. The difference matters. Done right, an extraction clears the pore and lets the skin settle. Done wrong, the same spot gets pushed deeper, inflamed, and more likely to mark or scar.

When extractions help

Let's talk about the scope.

Extractions can help when

  • Blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) are part of what’s clogging your skin
  • Congestion is concentrated in specific areas
  • You want surface clearing as part of a larger plan

They aren’t the answer when

  • The issue is deep, inflamed, or cystic acne — squeezing those makes them worse, and we won’t do it
  • The real driver is active, ongoing breakouts — that calls for treatment at the source, not surface clearing
  • They’d be the only thing you do — extractions clear what’s there now; they don’t keep new congestion from forming

If extractions aren’t right for your skin, we’ll tell you, and we’ll point you to what is.

How it’s performed

Careful, clean, and only where it helps.

Your provider prepares the skin first, then works on isolated comedones that are ready to release — using sanitary technique and proper tools, never aggressive squeezing or forcing. If a spot isn’t ready or isn’t appropriate to extract, we leave it alone. The goal is to clear congestion without traumatizing the surrounding skin.

It’s a measured, methodical process — closer to careful maintenance than the dramatic "extraction videos" you may have seen online.

Extractions alongside laser

A complement to your plan, not a standalone fix.

Extractions earn their place in a Clarity plan because they handle something lasers don’t. As our clinicians put it: we can’t laser around a deep comedone. Clearing existing congestion lets the rest of your plan — AviClear® for active acne, home care between visits — work on a cleaner starting point.

That’s why extractions are usually one part of a plan rather than a treatment on their own.

Aftercare

A quick word on aftercare.

Extracted skin needs a little gentleness afterward — your provider will give you specifics, but the basics are: keep your hands off the area, skip harsh actives for a day or two, and protect the skin from the sun. And the hardest one: let the spots you didn’t extract be. They’ll be handled at the right time, the right way.
